How does the camera record?
AutoCam™ records on to a memory card (purchased separately) in a series of clips; you can choose between 2, 5 and 15 minute clips. AutoCam™ will record each clip then break for 1-3 seconds while the clip is saved and the camera resets.
What clip length should I choose?
It is recommended that you leave the AutoCam™ set to two minute clips as this makes the clip easy to upload to YouTube, email or edit. Larger clips are more difficult to work with. If you make an error or try to pull the memory card out before AutoCam™ has been turned off then you may lose that particular clip; if set on 2 minutes then you will lose less vision than if set on 15 minutes.
How long will the camera record for?
The length of vision will depend on the size of your memory card.
For AutoCam™ (SD memory card) an 8GB card will give you approximately 3 hours of high definition vision, a 16GB approximately 6 hours and a 32GB card approximately 12 hours. When the memory card has reached its capacity it will then record over the vision previously recorded.
What sort of memory card do I need?
You will need a class 6 memory card (or above) from a well-known brand and purchased from a reputable source such as a camera store, well-known electrical goods retailer or OnSiteCameras. We have always found genuine Lexar or Sandisk brands to be reliable. Inferior and fake cards are commonly sold on the internet or at markets, and are not what they are labelled. Fake or inferior SD memory cards can freeze the camera, or fail to record even though the camera is indicating that it is recording.
Do I have to turn the camera off to remove or insert the memory card?
Yes, always turn the camera off before inserting or removing the memory card, otherwise the camera can freeze and require a reset before being operational again. You may lose the record of the most recent clip recorded.
Where do I put AutoCam™?
We suggest the camera is placed at the top of your windscreen to the left of the rear-view mirror, so that it does not obstruct your vision in any way. For truck drivers who don’t have a rear-view mirror we suggest placing the camera at the top of your windscreen on the left hand side. The driver should not be able to view the screen whilst driving. For AutoCam™ we recommend that the screen is always closed whilst driving to prevent any distraction being caused by the screen. Flip the screen down occasionally to see there is a red dot on the screen and the camera is functioning correctly. Please note each state of Australia may have different laws regarding devices being attached to the windscreen or dashboard, OnSiteCameras recommends you check and adhere to the laws of each state.
What angle should AutoCam™ be set at?
To get the best vision AutoCam™ should be angled so it sees one quarter sky and three quarters road. See our demonstration video clips on our website to get the best idea of the right view.
How is AutoCam™ powered?
AutoCam™ has an internal lithium battery which is recharged through your cigarette lighter socket.
Can I hardwire AutoCam™?
AutoCam™ must always be powered through your cigarette lighter socket. If you wish to hardwire, this can be achieved by installing a cigarette lighter socket under your dashboard and permanently connecting it through this socket.
Can AutoCam™ be used independently of the cigarette lighter socket?
AutoCam™ has an internal lithium battery which means it can be used independently of the power source for short periods. If you wish to record something outside of your vehicle for example, you simply disconnect the camera from then power source and mount and press the manual on/off button.
